Born from a passion which motivated the author to visit and study the site about 50 times over the last two decades, this guide book has been specifically designed to help you achieve this goal. The temples are abundantly illustrated and documented 780 pictures (by far a record) will show you, before you even start your reading, all the interesting sights you should not miss. And, thanks to a number of detailed floor plans indicating their exact location within the temples, you will be able to easily spot all these sights. An exclusive feature, a great time-saving tool and the guarantee that you will not pass by Angkor's hidden treasures without noticing them. Written in a clear, concise style, to make its content accessible to non-specialists, this revised edition incorporates the latest research on the subject and up-to-date information about the temples. Fitting nicely in your backpack, this guide book will prove to be an invaluable travel companion.
Focusing on the Angkor Temples The Guide Book 3rd Edition Michel Petrotchenko 8601418306306 Books
When I was planning my trip to Cambodia, primarily to see the temples of Angkor Wat, I only had two temples on my list: Angkor Wat itself and Ta Prohm, the two most famous ones. Angkor Wat Archeological Park is vast, with hundreds of temples, so it was at first overwhelming trying to narrow down which of those I would see in the four days I was in Siem Reap. One of the first things I did to prepare for my trip was buy Focusing on the Angkor Temples by Michel Petrotchenko. This guide book, which focuses on more than 80 temples, explains in detail the history of the temples, with full color photos and best of all, tips on when to see each temple and what not to miss. Further, the author had helpful maps which showed which temples were close together. This helped me immensely in choosing which ones to pick and in what order. During my trip, I left my other guide book at the hotel and took this one around with me to the various temples.

Focusing on the Angkor Temples The Guide Book 3rd Edition Michel Petrotchenko 8601418306306 Books Reviews
If you're going to buy one book about Angkor, this is it! I purchased the book after a trip to Angkor and found it invaluable for identifying the many pictures I took at the temples. Had I ordered before the trip and taken it with me, I would have learned about many of there photo ops that I missed. Don't make the same mistake if you're planing a trip to Siem Reap and the temples of Angkor!
Great book and I plan to take it with me next week when I make my visit to Cambodia/Siem Reap. Bought several books to prepare for my trip and this is by far the best. Great detail, pictures and information. I am an avid photographper and this book is exactly what I was looking for to prepare for my trip. Whether you are a casual visiter who just wants to enjoy the history and beauty of the temples or you are a detail oriented person like me who is looking for precise info to plan my photography this is your book. Even if you are not planning a trip to Cambodia and just want to learn about the ancient civilizations and temples this is a recommended book.
I bought this guide because my father is planning a trip to Angkor Wat next year, and this seemed to be the only guide that focused specifically on the temples (instead of only mentioning them only in passing on the way to Vietnam, for example). I'm SO glad I chose this book! The author's passion for his subject is infectious, and the book is full of wonderful explanations, detailed illustrations and beautiful photos. I found myself becoming so enthralled that I'm actually going to buy myself a copy so I can continue my armchair travels. And now, a personal note to the author Merci infiniment pour avoir publié un livre si beau et si plein de bons infos. C'est un chef d'oeuvre ... vraiment magnifique.
This is by far the best guidebook I've seen for the Angkor Temples. The book opens with about 100 pages of historical, religious and architectural information then features the twelve major temples in considerable detail. The excellent descriptions and photos are complemented by numerous maps and diagrams plus "must see" notes for each temple. Then there are similarly detailed descriptions of all the other temples in the wider Angkor area.
The book also contains suggested itineraries suited to the length of your stay, and contains numerous helpful tips on diverse topics ranging from the best time of day to view various sites to the best staircase to use when climbing one of the (very steep) temples in order to avoid slipping. This sort of information is like gold to a "self-guiding" traveller.
There are a great many sites to visit at Angkor and this book has been essential while planning my trip to ensure I don't miss anything significant. The book is also compact enough that I will be taking it with me to use my guide around the temples. The author's passion for his subject has produced a superb guidebook and I can thoroughly recommend it to anyone considering travelling to the temples of Angkor.
I cannot thank Mr Petrochenko enough for his efforts. This book was indispensible, and by the end of my stay in Angkor, it quite literally absorbed a lot of my sweat. Not only does it provide helpful context, it also enhances the temple experience, sending the traveler on a scavenger hunt in all kinds of nooks and crannies away from the screaming tour groups. You feel extra motivated to find that particularly beautiful devata, a relief that looks like a dinosaur, Agni riding a rhino, and the Khmer version of Tyrion Lannister. Need I go on? Just do yourself a favor and get it before that trip of a lifetime.
This book is the first one I've found that goes into detail about the temples. There are many pictures showing the architecture, how the buildings were created and explaining what was going on in the country at that time & since that time. I've always thought the temples were fascinating & this book does explain what was going on in the country at the time. I would love to see the temples in person - people that have tell me it's amazing. Amazing to see what people can do with very little to build with that we have today. Highly recommend this book if you are fascinated in the temples & their meaning.
I wrote one before; it doesn't show anywhere. Yet, Petrotchenko's work is of such quality that it encourages me to do it again.
I lived in neighbor Thailand for 15 years; I worked in Kampuchea many times and visited Angkor as far back as1969, after
reading Coed'es, Grosslier (and Prince Suphat Diskul) and other classic authors. it is very different today. The point is that any observation requires a 'mental frame' where to position what you are seeing. Most visitors do not have one prior to it (it takes lots of reading). Here comes Petrotchenko HE GIVES THAT FRAME ...at one go, so that what you will be seeing, will make sense, and stops being a collection of awesome architecture, beautiful carvings, splendid lay out, etc...; in addition, he gives you images in full colour photos and a structured sites sequence
A full, grandiose, civilization is re-born while reading this book. Thank you, Michel.
